William Wieler age 81 of Walhalla, ND, joined his loved ones in heaven on Sunday, April 30, 2006. He died after a courageous battle with cancer at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 2nd from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Burial in Walhalla Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements with Nelson-Askew Funeral Home, Walhalla, ND. Memorials are preferred to the Walhalla Ambulance Service.
William was born August 26, 1924, to Henry and Justina (Elias) Wieler on the family farm in rural Walhalla. He attended the Hilltop School, Walhalla and Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Altona, MB. He accepted Christ as his Savior at age 14 and was baptized when he was 18.
On September 17, 1950, he married Marie Driedger at Winkler, MB. They bought a farm close to where he grew up and he farmed for 65 years. He raised grains, beans, beef and milk cows, and chickens. This is where they raised their seven children and enjoyed watching their many grandchildren grow and play.
Bill served as township assessor for the past 30 years. He enjoyed the Walhalla men's bowling team and drove school bus for Walhalla Public School.
William and Marie were very involved with their church, Bethel Bergthaler Mennonite Church in southern Manitoba. He was one of the original founders and served on the church board for the first 12 years, served as an usher and a member of the finance committee.
He is survived by sons, Gerald (Jan) Wieler, Cavalier, ND; Richard (Marcia) Wieler, Dent, MN; Steven (Tia) Wieler, Grafton, ND and David (Terri) Wieler, Walhalla, ND; daughters, Esther (Preston) Doele, Canby, MN; Kathleen (Mark) Nelson, Enterprise, AL; and Alvina (Tim) Deyle, Fargo, ND; 22 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by wife, Marie of 48 years in 1999, his parents, sisters, Justina Letkeman, Margaret Wieler, and Anna Fehr, brothers, Cornelius and Henry Wieler.
