William Newell

William J. "Bill" Newell, 78, of Neche, ND died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at the Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Church, Neche, ND. Visitation on Thursday, July 8th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Park Center Cemetery, Neche, ND.
William J. Newell was born October 7, 1931 at Walhalla, ND to Jack and Irene (Olson) Newell. He attended grade school at Park Center and graduated from Neche High School in 1949. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, SD, where he trained as a jet pilot. Bill joined the North Dakota Air National Guard in Fargo in 1956, and served there until retiring from the Air Guard as Lieutenant Colonel in 1971. He graduated from the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo and started farming at Neche in 1961, until his retirement in 1995.
Bill was active in the community and had offices in different organizations including the Neche School Board, Neche American Legion, Pembina County Farm Bureau, Bathgate Masonic Lodge and the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Association.
On June 28, 1959, he married Donna Moen at Whitman, ND.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; children, Kay (Sheldon) Braget, Cavalier, Mark (Deanna) Newell and Wayne (Paula) Newell, all of Neche; grandsons, Cody, Blayne, Luke, Adam and Sam; and one brother, Manford (Eldean) Newell, Neche, ND.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
