Warren Kenneth ââ¬ÅDickââ¬Å¥ Waind was born August 2, 1922 to Mark and Dora (Butterwick) Waind at home in Milton, North Dakota. Warren was the fourth in a family of seven. He graduated from Milton High School in the Class of 1940. Following high school he worked in the Grocery Business in Grafton, ND for a year before moving to California to work in a defense industry plant. When World War II began he returned to Milton to enlist in the Army Air Corps. Warren met Millie Irwin at a dance in Nekoma, ND just before he enlisted in the Air Cadet program and just after she had completed nurses training. Warren and Millie were married on December 24, 1943 in Long Beach, California while he was in training.
A veteran of the Red Raider strikes on Formosa and the South China coast, he was discharged after 38 months having risen to the rank of Sgt. with the 5th Air Force, 22nd Bomb Group, 408th Bomb Squadron in the US Army Air Force. He earned battle stars as an aerial gunner on a B-24 for the air offensive over Japan, the China offensive, & the Borneo and China defensive campaigns.
Following his service, Warren and Millie settled in Milton, ND where he operated a grocery store/locker plant until 1962. Warren served as President of the Milton School Board for 12 years and as Sunday School Superintendent for 16 years. He moved his family to Langdon, ND in 1963 where he served as Deputy County Treasurer. In 1967 he was elected Cavalier County Treasurer and served until retiring in 1988. During much of this time Warren also enjoyed one of his major passions, serving as a Presbyterian Lay Pastor filling pulpits in numerous churches in the northeast region of North Dakota.
Warren is survived by his children: Mary (Doug) Bakken of Park Rapids, MN, Tom (Judy) Waind of Lake Metigoshe, ND, David (Charise) Waind of Minot, ND, Kathy (Bruce) Hall of Fargo, ND, Mark (Cindy) Waind of Grand Forks, ND, Joy (Pete) Barrett of Sartell, MN; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister: Jean Thomson of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters-in-Law: Geneva Waind of Fargo, ND and Helen Irwin of Grand Forks, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Millicent; his infant son: Jeffrey; grandsons: Jeff Bakken and Tim Waind; son-in-law: Bryon Anderson; and siblings: Bill Waind, Marjorie Hawkins, Alan Waind, Robert Waind, and Jerry Waind.
Warren passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, ND at the age of 89.
SERVICES will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Langdon Presbyterian Church in Langdon with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m.
