Vernon James Martindale, 83, of Cavalier, ND and formerly of Bathgate, ND, died on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND from respiratory failure. Vern was born on his family farm outside of Bathgate to James and Amelia (Kuball) Martindale on July 11, 1927. He attended school in Bathgate and graduated in 1943 at age 16. After graduating, he farmed near Bathgate, ND until his retirement. He also served in the Army for two years where he was stationed in Panama for one year. He drove school bus for 44 years for Neche Public School, Dietrich Bus Service in Grand Forks and Cavalier and the Grand Forks Park Service. He retired from bus driving at age 81.
He was a member of the Neche American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Joan (McGlynn) Martindale, daughters, Marquita Hains, Mankato, MN, Wendy (Dean) Bergene, Mankato, MN, Lorlee (Tim) Peterson, Mankato, MN and Peggy Wirtz, Sartell, MN, son-in-law Dan Wirtz, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Amelia, his sister, Elaine Jacobson and son, John "Jack" Martindale.
Visitation will be held at Jensen-Askew Funeral Home from 5 - 7 p.m. on Monday, April 25. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at St.Brigid's of Ireland Catholic Church in Cavalier at 2:30 p.m. with Father Krupich officiating.
