Velva Schmiess

January 25, 1934 — June 19, 2010

Velva Schmiess, 76, of Langdon, ND passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital of Langdon, ND.

Velva Adrian was born January 25, 1934 at Munich, ND to Henry and Mabel (Quiring) Adrian. She grew up in the area and graduated from Munich High School. Velva moved to Kansas where she attended a Mennonite Nurses College. When her father became ill she returned home and finished her education at Valley City State and was able to complete her clinical work in Devils Lake. She earned her BS in Nursing and achieved a perfect score on her nursing boards. While working on her clinical work, Velva needed her guitar tuned and was introduced to a young man named George. Velva was united in marriage to George Schmiess on October 13, 1957 at Valley City, ND. They made their home near Alsen and began their family. They retired from farming and moved permanently to Langdon in 1990. Velva adored her grandchildren. She loved to crochet and enjoyed anything crafty. She was talented with silk flowers and was able to do the flowers for many family members' weddings. She was dedicated to getting flowers out to the cemetery plots of loved ones. She enjoyed cooking, was active in quilting and had a kind soul and a great sense of humor.

Velva is survived by her husband George of Langdon, ND, children: Vicki Anderson of Grand Forks, ND; Sheldon (Tammie) Schmiess of Sabin, MN; Tim (Susan) Schmiess of Harvey, ND; Jodi (John) Gunnerson of Houston, TX, 11 grandchildren: Aaron Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Travis Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Katie Schmiess, Dustin Schmiess, Zachary Schmiess, Emily Schmiess, Jacob Schmiess, Rachel Schmiess, Joshua Schmiess, great-grandson Hayden Johnson, siblings: Lois Howatt of Cooperstown, ND; Gordon (Jan) Adrian of North Carolina; James Adrian of Fargo, ND; Ruth (Gerald) Schill of Fargo, ND, sister-in-law Jennie Schmiess of Grand Forks and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Martin Anderson, and brother Loygene Adrian.

VISITATION will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the First Baptist Church of Langdon, ND on Wednesday, June 23, 2010.

Visitation will also take place for one hour before the time of the services at the church on Thursday.

SERVICES will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the Swiss Mennonite Church of Alsen, ND.
