Velma Dumas was born at home in Park Center Township, Pembina County, ND on August 27, 1919. Her parents, Fred and Louise (Davis) Carpenter named their oldest daughter of three- Velma Ione Carpenter. She attended grades 1-8 across the road at the Park Center School. She lived in Walhalla with her paternal grandmother while attending Walhalla High School. Several of her Carpenter (girl) cousins also lived with this same grandmother and let me tell you, she could tell many great stories about some of the tricks they played on their grandmother.
After high school she worked for Hector Johnstone as a clerk in his grocery store, later owned the G & J Grocery Store and then became the bookkeeper at the J.C. Penney store located in what is now the Prescription Shop. After the Penney's store closed, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Heneman's V Store and later managed the store when the Henemans moved away from Walhalla. She was a member of the Legion of Mary, the Altar Society, and St. Boniface Catholic Church. She married Leonard Dumas at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla on December 6, 1943.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and twin infant sisters. Survivors include her two children, Joyce Ellen (Gene) Solberg and Jerry Francis(Karen) Dumas, both of Walhalla; six grandchildren, Audra, Chad, Michelle, Renae, Tony and Andrea; and the apple of Velma's eye who made her extremely happy whenever they came to see her, her eight great- grandchildren, McKinley, Cameron, Varissa, twins, Allison and Lydia, Lillie, Isabelle and Asher; two sisters, Evelyn Wolfram of Clamath Falls, CA, and Helen (Laurence) Hurley of Redlands, CA.
