Thelma Howatt, 89, of Langdon, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.

Thelma Theresa Bergman was born March 21, 1927 on the Bergman farm near Mt. Carmel to Sam and Marcella (Perius) Bergman. Thelma attended school in the Mt. Carmel area then graduated from St. Alphonsus High School in Langdon in 1945. She continued her education by obtaining a teaching certificate and taught in country schools in West Hope, Harvey & Hay Townships. She also worked briefly in Wisconsin and California. Thelma and Erle Howatt were married on October 24, 1956 in Mt. Carmel, ND. They moved to California then returned to Hannah, ND to raise their family. In 1981, Thelma & Erle moved to Langdon. They were fortunate to be able to spend their winters in Texas, Nevada, and Arizona for many years.

Thelma was a devoted mother to her four children and fourteen grandchildren and was very supportive and encouraging. She was talented. Thelma was a great cook and baker and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing and playing bingo. She had a passion for living life and served God and community. Thelma was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wales and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon where she was an active member in prayer group, bible study, and helped start the Christian bookstore. She was able to travel to Jerusalem and Caracus, South America. Thelma was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and American Cancer Society.

Surviving Thelma are her husband, Erle, of Langdon; children: Scott of Hannah, ND, Tracy (John) Frankowski of Irving, TX, Lisa (James) Pearson of Omaha, NE, Heidi Monette of Langdon; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Josephine Bergman. She was preceded in death by her parents, sons Rock and Reed, and brothers Orville and Clifford.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon.
Visitation will take place from 6:00-7:00 p.m. with a 6:40 p.m. Rosary and 7:00 prayer service on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon, ND. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday.
