Shirley Forbes ,84, of Cavalier, ND passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 27th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Shirley was born September 16, 1926, at Cavalier to Joseph and Ethel Mae (Campbell) Mayo. She grew up in Cavalier and graduated from Cavalier High School. Shirley then attended the University of North Dakota.
On April 17, 1949, she married Clinton H. Forbes at Cavalier. After their marriage they lived in Walhalla and in 1954, moved to Cavalier where they owned and operated the He-Mart until 1987. She was a member of the Cavalier Presbyterian Women, Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary. Shirley enjoyed the birthday club she belonged to and loved to fish with her family.
Survivors include her children: John Forbes of Cavalier and his friend Stella Styles, Barbara Barron and friend Donavon Sparrow, Henderson CO; grandchildren: Robert (Tammy) Barron and Julie "Barron" (Andrew) LeRoy; great grandsons: Dominique M. Martinez, Robert Forbes Barron, and Andrew Abbott LeRoy, all of the Denver area; sister-in-law, Beverly Mayo, Cavalier, ND and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Clint on November 24, 2009; brother, John J. Mayo and son-in-law, Allyn Barron.
Clergy: Rev. John Werth.
Casket Bearers: Colleen Erickson, John Hillis, Bill Mayo, Greg Mayo, Joe Mayo, and Tim Mayo.
Music: Erin Mayo, Angela Trenbeath, and Michelle Gullickson, Vocalists and Beth Kemp, Accompanist.
