Ruth Arens

October 10, 1927 — April 16, 2019

Ruth Arens, 91, formerly of Langdon, ND, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, in Casselton, ND.
Ruth (Myers) Arens was born October 10, 1927, to Dwight and Olga (Nelson) Myers in Langdon, ND. She grew up and went to school in Langdon, ND, where she also helped on her parent’s farm with her five brothers and sisters. On November 4, 1945, she married John Arens in Langdon, ND. Their family expanded as they added six children. After that, she relished her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and eventually her great-great-grandchildren. She spent her 91 years dedicated to her family, extended family, and friends. Born with a green thumb, she surrounded herself with plants and spent many hours tending to her garden and raspberry patch. Her family may be a bit biased, but no one made raspberry jam better than she did. Rivaling, or perhaps equal to, her green thumb were her kitchen skills. Many people in the Langdon area had the pleasure to taste her lefsa, potato salad, and Rice Krispies treats among other favorite hits, not to mention all of the meals she served to the many customers over the years from her work in the early days at the Green Mill and eventually at the Stables Supper Club where she worked until she was in her 80s when the many years of hard work started to take a toll on her body. For her family, Christmas Eve dinner was a labor of love- spending days preparing for the big event. Ruth was strong, independent, loving, supportive, and cherished her time with her vast family and friends. She was a true matriarch who has left an indelible mark on all who met her and leaves a legacy as a role model to her family. As much as her family and friends will miss her, her many years loving and teaching them will always be in their hearts, and her memory will be celebrated through the generations.
Ruth is survived by her children: Duane (Betty) Arens of Laporte, MN, Gene (Barb) Arens of Langdon, Dennis (Judy) Arens of Cavalier, ND, Deborah Arens of Casselton, ND, and Kevin Arens of Casselton; siblings: Carol (Ken) Nickerson, Judy Cox, Betty Skjerva, and Judd Myers; 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son Kerry, four infant grandchildren, and brothers Richard and Martin.
