Robert S. Hornung

Robert Stanislaus Hornung, age 97, died peacefully at Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, ND on Monday, October 1, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla, ND. The Reverend John Kizito will be officiating the funeral mass. Visitation will be Thursday, October 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery.

Robert was born May 8, 1921, on the family farm west of Walhalla to Robert J. and Elizabeth (Hoesl) Hornung. He was the third child of a family of five siblings. He attended eight years of school in Fremont Township and graduated from Walhalla High School in 1939.

Robert married Amelda Stremick on June 24, 1947 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla. During the years, they were blessed with five children. They eventually settled on a farm northwest of Walhalla where they would spend the rest of their married life.

Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Faith, family and friends were the center of his life. Over the years, family gatherings were always held on the farm which Robert and Amelda loved so dearly.

Robert farmed and raised cattle his entire life. People in the area came to recognize his top-quality beef. His hobbies were reading, dancing, card playing, and visiting with neighbors and friends. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as Grand Knight of the Walhalla Council from 1973-74. He also served on the CCD committee and Parish Council for three years. In later years, he loved to go for rides and see the farming operations and cattle. Farming and cattle were both on his mind until the very end.

Upon retiring at the age of 93, Robert moved into North Border Estates Assisted Living in 2013, and then into the Pembilier Nursing Center in 2018. Amelda passed away on July 30, 2017.

Robert is survived by his five children and their spouses: Dan (Deb) Hornung, Jamestown, ND; Mary (Pete) Murtaugh, Rugby, ND; Kathy (Mike) Fridgen, Stillwater, MN; Joe (Sharon) Hornung, Cupertino, CA; Susan (Steve) Swiontek, Devils Lake, ND, and his brother, John (Rosemary) Hornung, Walhalla, ND. Robert is survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were Amelda, his wife of seventy years, parents Robert and Elizabeth Hornung, sister Mercedes Brusseau, and brothers, Francis and Leo Hornung, grand-daughter Kristina Murtaugh, and great-grandson Benjamin Newfield.

Memorials are welcomed to St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Pembilier Nursing Center, both of Walhalla, ND.
