Richard Timian

July 15, 1930 — January 4, 2024

Cavalier, ND

Richard Timian, 93, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.  He was a man of great faith who died with grace and dignity, surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born July 15, 1930 to Erna (Buchweitz) and Ben Timian on their family farm near Dresden, ND.  He was baptized and confirmed at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Langdon, ND.  He started school in a one room country schoolhouse near the farm, attended Dresden School for grades nine and ten, and graduated from Langdon High School.

He was united in marriage to Arlys Sommer, September 14, 1952.  They were married in the basement of Our Savior Lutheran Church since the ground floor was not yet completed.  Richard served as an elder, President of the Church Council, and held several offices in his 71 years of membership at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Richard and Arlys moved to Cavalier and opened the Cavalier Dairy Queen along with Arlys’s father, John Sommer. Since the Dairy Queen was only open during the summer, Richard sold insurance during the other months.  He began Timian Insurance and Real Estate in 1960 and continued until his retirement.  Richard represented many different companies.  He was very successful as a salesman for Western States Life Insurance of Fargo ND.  He and Arlys attended many All-Star Conventions across the United States and even Europe.  They made many lifelong friends among the Western States family.

Richard was very active in the community and served on many civic committees, including the original Wedgewood Manor Nursing Home board and the Cavalier Improvement Association.

Richard loved music.  Arlys would play the piano while he would sing and strum his guitar.  It was a lively time around the piano at the Timian home when his extended family would get together.  He really enjoyed singing with the Cavalier Men’s Chorus and was happy to add his booming bass voice to any choir.

Preceding him  in death were, Arlys, his wife of 67 years, his parents, Erna and Ben Timian, and parents-in-law, John and Lillie Sommer.  Also, by his brothers, sister, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Orville (Virginia) Timian, Victor (Joan) Timian, Edna (Frank) Morey, George (Ella), Timian, Ben (Jane) Timian, Laverne (Lenora) Sommer, and his son-in-law Bill Stibbe.

He is survived by his son, Timothy (LaDonna) Timian, daughter, Susan Stibbe, grandchildren, Ashley Timian, Matthew Timian, Kaitlyn (Richard) Lewis, and Emily (Jake) Dahl, and great grandchildren, Eleanor Timian, Lucy Timian, Will Dahl, AJ Dahl, and Ridge Lewis.

Funeral service will beheld on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services.
