Paul E. Wellman, 53, of Cavalier, ND died Monday, October 13, 2008, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church, Edinburg, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Trinity Cemetery, Edinburg, ND.
Paul was born April 1, 1955, at Grafton, ND to Walter and Gertrude (Etterman) Wellman. He grew up and attended school at Edinburg graduating from high school in 1973. Paul then attended North Dakota State University in Fargo graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Soil Science in 1977. In June of 1977, he began working for the U.S.D.A. Soil Conversation Service as a soil scientist at Sturgis, SD. Then in November of 1977, worked with the U.S.D.A in Grand Forks, also doing soils surveying and mapping.
On November 26, 1977, he married Adrienne Novak at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lankin, ND. They moved to Lakota where he worked for the U.S.D.A. In 1981, he was transferred to Hillsboro to work as a District Soil Conservationist. In 1987, they moved to Cavalier where he was Resource Conservation and Development coordinator for Pembina, Walsh, Grand Forks, and Nelson counties. He worked 31 years for the U.S.D.A.
He was a very loving husband and father, his kids were very precious to him. He loved to watch his son Charlie play football, take his right hand men, Paul, Jr. and his dad to the farm, and listen to Jessica play the piano. Spending time with his family whether it was traveling, sharing a good meal, or just being together were also things he loved. Paul was a much loved son and brother. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, farming, and taking care of his cattle. He was a member of the Church of God in Edinburg.
Survivors include his wife, Adrienne; children, Paul Wellman Jr, Cavalier, ND, Jessica Wellman, Cavalier (fiancée, Craig Bata, Adams, ND), Charles Wellman, Cavalier; father, Walter Wellman, Edinburg, ND; siblings, Lois (Bob) Lundquist, Adams, ND, Judy (Jim) Killfoil and Jean Wellman all of Grand Forks, ND, Don (Jodi) Wellman, Fargo, ND; father-in-law, Mark J. (Dorothy) Novak, Lankin, ND; brother-in-law, Mark A. (Lara) Novak, Lankin, ND, six nieces, seven nephews, three great nephews, one great niece, and several aunts and uncles.
Preceding him in death was his mother, Gertrude Wellman; infant brother, Timmy; mother-in-law, Irene Novak; sister-in-law, Janet Novak.
Clergy: Rev. Mark Antal.
Honorary Pallbearers: All of Paul's Friends and Co-Workers; Jeffrey and Jordan Johnson, Christian and Courtney Hoper, Emma, Olivia, Maggie, and Matthew Novak.
Casket Bearers: Bob Lundquist, Jr., Jim Killfoil, Mark A. Novak, Bob Lundquist III, Joel Johnson, Josh Killfoil, Jared Killfoil, Aaron Wellman, and Austan Wellman.
Music: Ruth Hall, Rita Meilke, David Monson, Joshua and Jared Killfoil, Vocalists; Caroline Olson, Accompanist.
