Palmer Jonasson, age 78, of Mountain, ND died on Saturday, November 11, 2006, at the MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 16, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Vikur Lutheran Church, Mountain, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m. prayer service at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Thingvalla Cemetery, rural Mountain, ND.
Joseph Palmer Jonasson was born in Thingvalla Township, December 25, 1927, the son of G.J. and Elizabet (Geston) Jonassson. Palmer was very proud of his 100% Icelandic heritage.
He attended east Eyford rural school, graduated from Mountain High School, and attended Aakers Business College. He spent one winter in San Francisco, returning to North Dakota where he worked as a farm laborer for several local farmers. Palmer then went into farming on his own, retiring in 1989.
Palmer served as Thingvalla Township assessor for four years, treasurer for the Thingvalla Lutheran Church for several years, and as Mountain city auditor for 16 years.
On January 5, 1979, he married Esther Baarstad Olgeirson and they lived in Mountain. He thought of Esther's family as his own and was a very proud grandpa and great grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; stepdaughter, Margaret (Tom) Lorenzen, Gurnee, IL; step granddaughters, Tonia (Derryll) Richter and Trudy (Darrin) Goode; great granddaughter, Abigail Richter; two great grandsons, Ethan and Eric Goode, all of Fox Lake, IL; brother, Mortiz (Lorraine) Jonasson, Fairfield, CA; 14 nephews; eight nieces; and many great nephews and nieces; and several great-great nephews and nieces.
Palmer was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Louise (Valdi) Olafson and Ellen (Albert) Thrush; brother, Joe; nephew, James Thrush; and great nephew, Brian Olafson.
Clergy: Rev Erik Heskin.
Honorary Pallbearers: Palmer's great nieces and nephews: Pam Furstenau, Brenda Symington, Barb Aasen, Renata Selzer, Melanie Kelley, Jerri Sapa, Corey Sapa, and all relatives and friends.
Casket Bearers: Palmer's great nephews: Anthony Aarseth, John Baarstad, Alan Olafson, Darren Olafson, Drew Olafson, and Brad Sapa.
