Niel M. Schluchter

Niel Marvin Schluchter, 80, of Cavalier, ND died on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 9, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation on Wednesday, September 8th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Niel Marvin Schluchter was born May 20, 1930, near Backoo, ND to Marvin and Edna (Hildebrant) Schluchter. He grew up in the Backoo area. Niel served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. After his discharge from the service, he returned to the Backoo area where he farmed raising grain and sugar beets. He also raised beef cattle and horses. As a family, they showed horses in North Dakota, Arizona, and Missouri. Niel was a member of the Arabian and American Quarter Horse Associations, Pembina County Saddle Club, Lavern J. Thompson Post #11, Cavalier American Legion, and served on the Pembina County Fair Board.
On June 17, 1954, he married Ruth Ann Well at Cavalier.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann; daughter, Luann (Nick) Mastropolito, Indio, CA; son-in-law, Michael Vistad, Cavalier; grandchildren, Joshua and Alyssa Vistad and Lindsey and Justin Mastropolito; siblings, Mary (Marlow) Gudmundson and Connie (Bob) Peterson all of Vista, CA, and Kathy (Arthur) Stephens, Escondido, CA.
Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Diane Vistad and sister, Shirley Thomson.
Clergy: Rev. Lori Broschat.
Military Rites: Lavern J. Thompson Post #11, Cavalier American Legion.
Music: Rodger Hartz, Soloist and Cheryl Hartz, Organist.
Honorary Pallbearers: Earl Mountain, Dick Thomson, Jeff Thomson, and John Thomson.
Casket Bearers: Gerald Kemnitz, Wayne Keney, Chuck Thacker, Bill Thomson, Bob Thomson, and Jim Thomson.
