Nellie R. Mahar age 94 of Hamilton and Cavalier, ND passed away Monday, August 14, 2006, at the Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 18, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation on Thursday, August 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Burial in the St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery, Cavalier, ND.
Nellie Phelps was born September 1, 1911, to Roscoe and Selvia (Pelerine) Phelps. She attended country school in Joliette, ND, completing her schooling at St. James Academy, Grand Forks, ND.
On August 9, 1932, she married Ray Mahar. They resided on a farm in rural Hamilton where they farmed and raised livestock. Following Ray's passing in 1979, she continued to live on the farm until 1997. Nellie then resided at the Country Estates in Cavalier.
She taught 4-H for many years inspiring the many gifts and talents of young learners in the community. Nellie was an active and devoted member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and Altar Society. She loved nature and shared her love of the great outdoors with all her grandchildren. Her dedication and love for others was apparent in all of her relationships. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her zest for life, positive attitude and resilient nature will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Nellie is survived by daughters, Mary Lou (Bruce) Berend, Solana Beach, CA and Karen Beaudine, Cavalier, ND; grandchildren, Jeff (Janet) Berend and children, Rell and Benjamin and Jason Berend (Clare Zimmerman) all of California; Kenny (Sarah) Beaudine family, Dumas, TX; Angela (Marvin) Longtin and children, Morgan, Cameo, and Ty, Cavalier, ND.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, John Beaudine; brothers, Bill and Roscoe; sister, Zaida and half-sister, Peggy McMillan.
Clergy: Deacon Jim Carpenter
Music: Jill Dalzell, Soloist and Bernadine Kopf, Organist
Casket Bearers: Kenny Beaudine, Jeff Berend, Jason Berend, Bruce Berend, Marvin Longtin, and Pat Mahar.
