Myles Johnson

Myles Johnson, 90, of Langdon, ND passed away on June 3, 2009 at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital of Langdon, ND.

Myles was born September 27, 1918 to Marie and Playmert Johnson at his home farm in Loam Township. He was proud of his Icelandic heritage. (His mother lived to be 100 years old.) He grew up with his five sisters working on the family farm. He also worked at the UCT Hotel and Green Mill Café while he attended Langdon High School where he participated in sports and music and graduated in 1937. On July 10, 1943, he married Leona Chaput whom he met at the Cavalier County Courthouse where they were both working. Together the couple built their own home and raised a family in Langdon where Myles worked as a banker for 35 years.

Myles was very active in his community. He was president and on the board of First Bank for 20 years. He also served on the United Telephone Board, the hospital board, and was treasurer of the Langdon School District for 18 years. In 1966, Myles was awarded the “Outstanding Citizen Award” and in 1962 he was named as an Honorary Chapter Farmer. Myles belonged to the Commercial Club, Fire Department, Curling Club, a bowling league, Langdon Country Club, “Seven Jesters” Band and the choir at United Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; children: Karen (Robert) Karn of St. Cloud, MN, Kaye (Merle) Mikkelsen of Grand Forks, ND, Jeff (Bev) Johnson of Alexandria, MN, Jerry (Darlene) Johnson of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren: Emily, Anne, Aaron, Peter, Sarah, John, Brian, Eric, Scott, Jessica, Ross, Michael and Tyler; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Delores McGinnis of Langdon and Margaret (Mark) Lorenz of Breckenridge, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Phyllis Krueger, Valerie Boyd, and Barbara Johnson.

Myles enjoyed music, golfing, bowling, fishing, traveling, and gathering to celebrate family events. He loved his family and demonstrated that love in so many ways. He will be greatly missed by them.

Services will be held Monday, June 8, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon, ND.
