Mildred Bigwood, 100, of St. Thomas, ND, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas United Methodist Church, St. Thomas. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church.
Mildred was born on March 15, 1913, to Alfred and Nellie (Furtan) Lunde, on the family farm near St. Thomas. She attended rural Duffy School, finishing the 8th grade in seven years. After graduating from St. Thomas High School in 1930, she received her teaching degree from Mayville State Teachers College and taught at several rural schools in the area.
On November 14, 1937, she married Albert Bigwood, where they lived on a farm near St. Thomas. A son, Gary Wayne Bigwood was born into that union. In 1961, after Albert's death, she took over and successfully operated the Hartze Store, which they owned. She married William Bigwood in 1972. They moved to the farm and in 2004 she moved into Wedgewood Manor.
Mildred was a member of the United Methodist Church in St. Thomas, Christian Women's Group of Cavalier and the Republican Women's Group. Things she enjoyed were gardening, music, baking, sewing and quilting, and she loved to read. She celebrated her 90th birthday at St. Thomas Methodist Church and her 100th birthday at Wedgewood Manor.
Survivors include her son: Gary Wayne (Ervinna Lynn), Toronto, Ontario; grandchildren: Robert Wayne Bigwood, and Shannon (Michael) Siemens all of Winnipeg, Manitoba; great grandchildren Tye, Bryn, Sunny, Leif and Brayden Siemens; sister: Donna Niemann, St. Thomas; sister-in-law: Bernice Lunde and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Albert; brothers: Roy, Wilbur, John, Selmer, and Clayton; sisters: Goldie Irey, Evelyn Thom, Phyllis Tisdale, Violet Turner; husband: William.
Clergy, Rev. Lee Gale; Music, Donna Niemann, Organist; Casket Bearers: Chad Bigwood, Rick Bigwood, John Lunde, Tim Lunde, Lynn Niemann, Lyle Niemann.
