Merle Quam, age 78, of Tolna, ND and formerly of Cavalier, ND died on Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Valley Eldercare, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation on Wednesday, September 16th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Merle was born October 7, 1930, at Lakota, ND to Ewert and Irene Quam. He grew up in the Tolna area and graduated from Lakota High School. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he attended the University of North Dakota and received his degree in education. He taught school at Lake Bronson for one year and then taught and coached at Cavalier until his retirement. Merle was a member of the Cavalier and Tolna American Legion Posts.
On June 25, 1965, she married Phyllis Bill at Cavalier. Phyllis died on January 9, 2004. In 2005, he moved to Tolna, ND.
He is survived by his daughter, Terry Lyn Quam, Menno, SD.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, and brothers, Lloyd and Gordon Quam.

Military Rites by the Lavern J. Thompson Post #11, Cavalier American Legion.
Casket Bearers: Jeff Cull, Vanessa Gunning, Lee Menzies, Sandi McDonald, Les Puppe, and Connie Trenbeath.
Music: Patty Laqua, soloist and Kim Cull, organist.
