Mata Hartje, 83, of Cavalier, ND died Sunday, December 19, 2010, at her home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at 11:00 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 21st from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Due to a family member that is very scent sensitive, please refrain from the use of men's and women's colognes. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Cavalier Ambulance Service.
Mata I. Stark was born January 7, 1927, at Bathgate, ND to William and Amelia (Elke) Stark. She attended the Crosby School and was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, Neche, ND.
On June 16, 1944, she married Ardell H. Hartje at Bathgate. After their marriage they lived in the Cavalier area. Mata was well known in the area for her work as a painter, stainer, and hanging wallpaper. Her hobbies included golfing, gardening, canning, and was famous for her homemade sauerkraut.
Survivor include her children: Marlene (Clarence) Boettger, Hamilton, ND; Judy (Carlton) Ill, Cavalier; Joanne (Rodger) Rasmussen, Crystal, ND; Gary (Karin) Hartje, Sioux Falls, ND; Dennis and Scott Hartje, both of Cavalier; daughter-in-law, Gwen Hartje, Cavalier; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and sisters: Ethel Simundson and Anne Rollefstad, both of Grand Forks, ND.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Ardell on April 19, 2008; son, Mark; brother, Daniel Stark; and infant sister, Marlene.
Clergy: Rev. Mark Chepulis.
Casket Bearers: Anthony Anderson, Bradly Hartje, Chad Hartje, James Hartje, Ryan Hartje, Paul Ill, Tim Ill, Jason Rasmussen, and Jeff Rasmussen.
Honorary Pallbearers: All of Mata's Granddaughters and Cooper.
Music: Bettie Lous Stegman, Organist.
