Marvin was born on June 15, 1936 in Bathgate, ND to William and Helen Werman, and was one of seven children. After graduating from Cavalier High School, he joined the Army. Marvin and his new bride moved back to North Dakota to run the family farm in Hensel, where he raised livestock and farmed all his life.
