Marlys Kutter LaQua

March 2, 1928 — September 11, 2007

Marlys Kutter LaQua, 79, formerly of Hankinson and Langdon, ND, died of cancer on September 11, 2007 at 6:05 AM at Summerwood of Plymouth, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The daughter of Pauline Petrich Pohl Kutter and Harry Kutter, Marlys was born on March 2nd, 1928 in Hankinson, ND. Graduating from Hankinson High School, she worked at the Lincoln State Bank. Marlys was united in holy matrimony to John F. LaQua, her life-long partner, on June 11, 1949, and moved to Grand Forks while John attended Law School at the University of North Dakota. In 1951, they ventured to Langdon, ND, residing in the Brezina Apartments until occupying the home built by John’s father, Frank, at 1211 9th St. For 50 years, they lived joyfully on Candy Cane Lane in their “white house with the blue shutters.”

Gentle Marlys was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, the P.E.O, American Legion Auxiliary, Women’s Club, an avid calculating bridge player, a Boy Scout Den mother, and devoted, loved, and beloved mother of her four children, and six grandchildren. She loved collecting and displaying wildflowers, and followed the seasons through her study and love of migratory birds that alighted on bird feeders set on the towering pine tree outside her kitchen window. Summer was not summoned until she exclaimed with rapture, “Oh, a goldfinch!”

Preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and Harry, and her brothers, Fred, Ed, and Herb Pohl, she is survived by her sisters, Ethel Hald (Robbinsdale, MN) Mabel Coppin, (Lidgerwood, ND) husband, John, (Plymouth, MN) son, Keith (Los Angeles, CA.) daughter, Colette and her husband Lee Goderstad, (Roseville, MN) daughter, Jeannine and her husband John Sherman, (Plymouth, MN,) son, John Jr., (Plymouth, MN) and grandchildren, Linnea and Lily Goderstad, Ian, Drew, and Paige LaQua, and Katharine Sherman, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A visitation will be held at the Brooks Funeral Home, 623 9th Ave., in Langdon, ND at 6 PM with a 7PM prayer service on Friday, September 14th. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, September 15th at 10 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, junction of 9th St. and Hwy 5, followed by a fellowship reception. The burial internment is scheduled for late Saturday at 6 PM in Hankinson, ND at the Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
