It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Bakkum Collins, who left this world on September 9, 2024, in his birthplace of Grafton, ND. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Cavalier. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier.
Born on December 30, 1943, Mark was a beacon of kindness, loyalty, and love throughout his remarkable life.
Mark was the beloved son of Thelma and Herb Collins. He was greeted in heaven by his parents; his beloved wife, Anne; his son, Robert Widme; and his brother, Stephen Collins.
Mark’s journey was one enriched with love and family. On July 24, 1982, he married the love of his life, Anne, in Hamilton, ND. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, which only grew stronger with the years.
Mark’s educational pursuits led him to Aaker’s Business College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration in 1964. He furthered his education at Mayville State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1976. Duty to his country called, and from 1965 to 1967, he served honorably during the Vietnam Era at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
His professional life was as varied and fulfilling as his personal one. Mark was employed by Napa Supply Store and Carquest in Cavalier, ND, for nearly two decades. His roots in farming, a passion he nurtured throughout his lifetime, were a testament to his hardworking nature and deep connection to the land.
Mark’s passions extended beyond work and family. He had a profound love for classic cars and farming.
However, it was his family that he cherished most, making countless memories that will be treasured by those he leaves behind.
He is survived by his loving children: David Widme of Thief River Falls, MN; Judy Widme of Cavalier; Sandy (Bob) Flaten of Park River, ND; Staci McLaughlin of Roseville, CA; Mark J. Collins of Brooks, MN; and Jennifer (Jeremy) Toso of Red Lake Falls, MN. Mark was a proud grandfather to Karissa (Rocky) Fredericksen, Camille Widme, Mark V. (Gwynne) Smith, Jr., Shane (Cassidy) McLaughlin, Ethan Toso, and Brendan Toso. His legacy also continues through his great-grandsons, Brantley and Parker. He will be deeply missed by his brother Stuart (Joan) Collins and his special friends, Pat and Carol Cook family & Tim Mertz.
Mark was known for his loving, kind, and loyal nature. He was an all-around nice guy who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Though Mark’s presence will be deeply missed, his spirit, love, and the memories he created will continue to brighten the lives of those he touched.
Rest in peace, Mark. Your journey on earth may have ended, but you will live on in our hearts forever.
