Lorraine Schroeder

   Lorraine Schroeder, age 92 of Cavalier, ND, passed away Sunday, May 2nd, 2021, at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier. 
Gudrun Anna Lorraine Bjornson was born November 16th, 1928 on the Bjornson family farm, northeast of Mountain, ND to G.E. (Steini) and Loa (Swainson) Bjornson. She attended Eastman Country School and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1946. She was crowned Cavalier Homecoming Queen for 1945.
   Lorraine married Ted Schroeder on September 12th, 1946, and farmed with Ted for two years on the Schroeder farmstead located south of Cavalier, then moved into Cavalier for the next 12 years. They built their family home on the farmstead and continued to live there for the next 53 years until Ted’s passing June 13, 2013. Two years later, she moved to Wedgewood Manor.
   Lorraine held many jobs over her lifetime; some for hire, many as a volunteer. She had been a secretary for the Pembina County Superintendent of Schools; secretary to the Presbyterian pastor; photographer’s assistant (to Ted), as well as proof reader, reporter, and janitor at The Cavalier Chronicle.
   Her talents became more apparent when she became a charter member of the Northeastern North Dakota Heritage Association and began to volunteer her time to various projects and committees. Her ability to organize and her flair for display became a driving passion in her life, while she helped the Heritage Center get established. She spent countless hours volunteering her time, her ideas, and her talent for creating displays for all the ethnic cultures in the area; and also was instrumental in decorating the Center for each holiday of the year.
   Henry Duray, then Manager of Icelandic State Park, presented her the 1999 Merit Award as Outstanding Volunteer from the ND State Parks and Recreation Department. Then, in 2006, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for 20 years of service and devoting over 20,000 hours of time to the Icelandic Heritage Center. This was the “Take Pride In America” award, given to her in Bismarck by Gov. John Hoven. Eight years later, she was given the most prestigious honor available by the Heritage Association. She was selected as an Honorary Board Member, and was presented this award by Alfred Byron for 28 years of service. 
   She was a very active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and served in numerous positions there throughout her life. Among those was her involvement with the planning and building committee for the new church building.
   She and Ted enjoyed many years square dancing, resulting in many lifelong friendships. Music was an integral part in both of their lives. She and Ted both sang and played guitars at various functions and entertained their family with their harmonizing for both their children and grandchildren.
   Survivors include her four children: Judie Gill of Cavalier, Jerry (Kathy) Schroeder of Horace, ND, Tim (Debbie) Schroeder and Lynn (Judy) Schroeder, all of Cavalier; nine grandchildren: Susie Tinnon of Glendale, AZ, Tami Tinnon of Peoria, AZ, Tom (Tori) Tinnon of Austin, TX, and Tari Tinnon of Phoenix, AZ, Karmel (Seth) Janz of Littleton, CO, Colin Schroeder of Thornton, CO, Bill (Heather) Loftsgard of Hoople, ND, Tiffany (Sean) Vannett of Devils Lake, ND, and Timothy Michael (Ashley) Schroeder of Cavalier; 18 great grandchilden; five great great grandchildren; sister, Willis Busse of Langdon, ND; and several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted; grandson, Kipp Schroeder; great grandson, J.D. Warfield; brother, Magnus (Mike) Bjornson; sister-in-law, Doris Biliske-Otto; and brother-in-law, Clair Busse.
   Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 7th, 2021 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cavalier. A visitation will be held for two hours, from 12 noon to the start of the funeral (masks optional). Interment will be at Zion Cemetery, located two miles east of Cavalier.
   Memorials are preferred to the Northeastern North Dakota Heritage Association or the charity of your choice.
