Leonard Ekberg, 83, of Grand Forks and formerly of Langdon, ND passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND.
Leonard A. Ekberg was born July 27, 1928 at Hamill, South Dakota, the son of Arthur and Mae (Long) Ekberg. They moved to the Vang area and then to Osnabrock, ND. He attended school in Osnabrock. He worked for area farmers and the Osnabrock gas station until entering the service in the Korean Conflict from January 1951 to October 1952.
He married Mary Louise Waltz on August 26, 1954 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon. He worked at Klink and Norb's Standard Station, the Langdon Creamery and for the Langdon Street Department until his retirement in 1990. He also worked for area farmers in his spare time, working with Robert Baldwin for over 30 years.
Leonard was a member of the American Legion, the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, and after he and Mary relocated to Grand Forks in 2007, Holy Family Catholic Church. Leonard became a resident of Valley Elder Care in 2010. Leonard always enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during family get-togethers, camping trips, vacations, tractor pulls and always loved going to parades.
Leonard is survived by his wife: Mary; sons: Darrell (Julie) Ekberg of Manvel, ND and Dean Ekberg of Pine Island, MN; daughters: Dr. Carol Murie of Grand Forks, ND and Colleen (Bruce) Hagen of New Rockford, ND; five grandchildren: Riley and Liz Hagen, Jennifer (Trevis) Ekberg, and John and Anna Murie; sisters: LaVern Spanier of Park River, ND, Evelyn (Del) Chaput of Cooperstown, ND, Shirley (Glen) Hiltner of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Delores Rickard; brothers: Arnold and Gene Ekberg; and granddaughter: Janelle Ekberg.
Visitation will begin at 4:00 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service on Wednesday, October 26th, 2011 at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon, ND.
Services will be on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at 2:00 pm at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with Fr. William McDermott officiating.
