Laverne Staples, 92, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Cavalier, ND passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 10:30a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Cavalier. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. with a 7:00p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier.
Cecil Laverne Staples was born May 17, 1921 at Hamilton, ND to Cecil and Alvina (Hudson) Staples. He grew up in Hamilton and attended school there until the eighth grade, then graduating from Park River Ag School. On November 5, 1943, Laverne married Doris Gelder in Bathgate, ND. After their marriage, they moved to Chicago, IL, and then back to Hamilton where Laverne owned Staples Cash Service. He worked at Irwin Motors and then managed Wilson Brothers Parts Store where he eventually retired. Some of his hobbies include fishing, hunting, carpentry, attending flea markets and auction sales. Laverne won many ribbons at the Pembina County Fair for his gardening. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him. Laverne became a member of the Masonic Lodge in 1948 and has been a lifelong member.
Survivors include his daughters: Colleen Jorgensen, Fargo, Eleanor (Craig) Stuberg, St. Thomas, Lonnie Bonner, Fargo, Shelly (Guy) Kain, Grand Forks, Peggy Johnson, Fargo; grandchildren: Cory Jorgensen, Rory (Rhonda) Jorgensen; Lori (Tony) Johnson, Jason (Katie) Dewar, Kimberly (Allen) Anderson, Traci (Curt) Berg, Heidi (Nathan) Knudsen; Toni (Charles) Confer, Amy (Travis) Zeugin; six great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandson; brothers: John Staples, Fort Collins, CO, and Harvey (Doris Marlene) Staples, Cavalier, ND.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Doris, and siblings Raymond Staples and Helen Fern Staples.
