Kathleen (Kate) Johnston, 91, of Langdon, ND and formerly of Hannah, ND, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2012 at Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND.
Kathleen Muriel Carpenter was born in Canada on April 6, 1921, the daughter of John W. and Ada Carpenter. She came to the Donald McIntosh farm with her parents as a child. They moved to a farm north of Hannah. She attended school and graduated from Hannah High School in 1939. She became a naturalized American Citizen on May 28, 1945 at District Court of Cavalier County in Langdon, ND. Kathleen married Leonard Johnston at Cando, ND on December 17, 1945. A daughter, Sharon Kay, and a son, Terry Lynn, were born to this union.
Kathleen was employed by Hannah Public School as a cook for the hot lunch program for twenty years. Throughout the years she also helped out at the local drugstore, cafĩ and store. She was employed at the Hannah Post Office for several years until they moved to Langdon in 1993. Leonard passed away December 17, 1993.
Kathleen is survived by daughter Sharon (Ole) Borgen of Grand Forks, ND and son Terry & Cindy (Otto) Johnston of Langdon, ND, seven grandchildren: Timothy (Lisa) Borgen, Daniel (Angela) Borgen, Aaron (Ann) Johnston, Emily (Bill) Kieffer, Gabriel (Kristi) Johnston, Adam Johnston, Julian Johnston, and 11 great-grandchildren. Surviving sisters are Mary Neff of McClusky, ND and Shirley Peterson of Mayville, ND.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Leonard; her parents John and Ada Carpenter; baby sister, Joyce Carpenter; and brothers: John Athol Carpenter, Howard Carpenter, and Charles Carpenter.
Kathleen was a member of International Rebekah Lodge at Hannah until it closed and then a member of North Star Rebekah Lodge at Hampden until itââ¬â¢s closure. She was a member of Langdon Methodist Church, Sarah Circle, United Methodist Women, the Langdon American Legion Auxiliary, and the Langdon Senior Citizenââ¬â¢s Club. She has been a member of the Senior Meals and Services Board, the Senior Citizenââ¬â¢s Board, the Council on the Aging Board and the Cavalier County Housing Authority Board.
