Josephine Carpenter, 91, of Cavalier and formerly of Walhalla, ND passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 23, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Walhalla Assembly of God Church, Walhalla. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 22nd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Burial in the Hillside Cemetery, Walhalla.
Josephine Francis Hiebert was born June 16, 1920, at Alsen, ND to Frank and Carrie (Albrecht) Hiebert. At the age of 13 her family moved to Walhalla where they lived at the brick mine. On October 16, 1940, she married Lynn Carpenter at Walhalla and they moved to the North Olga area near the Little Pembina River. There they owned and operated a butchering business and Josephine also worked at Thompson's Bakery in Walhalla. Later they moved to Cavalier and Lynn passed away on November 25, 1996. For many years she wrote the North Olga news for the Walhalla Mountaineer.
She taught Sunday School and played guitar at the church in Poplar Grove and in Walhalla. Some of her other pastimes were cooking, baking, tending her flowers, and gardening.
Survivors include her children: Alice (Gene) Kringstad, Hoople, ND, Howard Carpenter, Grand Forks, ND, Judy (Ty) Kraemer, Salem, OR, Donna (Mickey) Tidmore, Arab, AL, and Betty (David) Thomasson, Cavalier; 20 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, siblings: Andrew Hiebert, Walhalla, Eugene Hiebert, Long Beach, CA, and Alice Hieggelke, Lisbon, ND.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; children: Carol Arnold and Ronnie and Duane Carpenter; and brother, Edwin Carpenter.
Clergy: Rev. Dann Pageler.
Music: Sharon Carpenter, Organist and Jennifer Pageler and Sharon Carpenter, Vocalists.
Casket Bearers: Glenn Carpenter, Jared Carpenter, Jason Carpenter, Jay Kringstad, and Jamie Thomasson.
