John Schaffer

John R. Schaffer, 78, of Langdon and formerly of Cando and East Grand Forks, ND, passed away Friday, August 13, 2010, at the Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND.

John was born July 22, 1932 at Cando, ND to Henry and Antoinette (Schoen) Schaffer. He was raised in Cando, graduating from Cando High School in the class of 1950. John went on to Wahpeton State where he continued his education. He returned to Cando where he joined the First State Bank of Cando. He was active in the community, including instituting low income housing. John and Barbara Morris were united in marriage in 1957 in Cando. In 1972 they moved to East Grand Forks where John was employed by the First State Bank. John was active in area activities and worked on establishing a country club in East Grand Forks. After four year the couple moved to Langdon, ND where John went into Accounting with John Brekke. The firm later became known as Schaffer and Associates. While operating the firm, John also dedicated time to area events and causes. He served on the Hospital Board, the Chamber, served on the Maple Manor Care Center Board for over 40 years, and served on the Steering Committee for the Langdon Centennial along with establishing the Pioneer Wall. He was active in career related organizations, serving on National Committees for Public Accountants, as State President, held both state and local offices and served on numerous committees. John and Barbara were able to spend nearly 40 years enjoying time spent at their lake cabin in Canada. John especially enjoyed playing bridge and golfing. John retired in 1997 and he and Barb have continued to make their home in Langdon.

John is survived by his wife Barbara Schaffer of Langdon, nieces and nephews: Barbara Fahey of Edmunds, WA, Mark Schaffer of MN, Rick Schaffer of MN, Jamie Schaffer of Cando, ND, Becky Schaffer Lehring of Rochester, MN and Linda Necas of Dent, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Lawrence, Martin, Richard, Leo, Hank, Ralph, Mary Louise and Ernestine.

SERVICES will be held Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 11:00 O �Clock, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon, ND.

INTERMENT will take place at Cando, ND at 3pm on August 17, 2010.
