John (Jack) E. Schafer, 79, of Calvin, ND died February 28, 2006 at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital of Langdon, North Dakota.
John (Jack) E. Schafer was born September 22, 1926 to John and Belle (Moore) Schafer in Glenila Township, Cavalier County. He graduated from High School in Calvin and went on to attend Dickinson State College and Minot State College. Jack was active in Baseball and Basketball in High School and was a member of the 1943 Calvin basketball team that went to the state tournament. He continued to play basketball in College, playing for Dickinson State. He returned to Glenila Township where he farmed. On November 8, 1950 he was inducted into the United States Army. He served in the medic division and was stationed overseas in Germany. He was honorably discharged October 31, 1952 and returned to Glenila Township to continue in his farming operation. Jack retired in 1991 and has continued to live on the farm. He was a member of the Glenila Presbyterian Church, served on the Glenila Township Board and the Calvin Farmers Union Elevator Board. He enjoyed Curling and Dancing and was an avid reader. He contributed to several charities and remained active in sports through refereeing.
John (Jack) E. Schafer is survived by his brother, Earle (Wanelda) Schafer of Big Arm, Montana, sister, Zelda (Ervin) Rinas of Egeland, ND, sister-in-law, Lois Schafer of Dickinson, ND and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Edwin Schafer and nephew John Schafer.
