Jeanette Angeline Berard was born June 9, 1917, at Bathgate, ND to Eugene and Lea (Charbonneau) Berard. She attended grade school in a one room school house, often reminding her children how she walked back and forth to school. As a young girl, she herded cattle on prairie land having to stand on a stump to get on the horse. After grade school, she worked for and lived with families in Bathgate so she could attend high school.
On October 22, 1935, she married Virgil D. DeMars at Bathgate. After their marriage, they lived in Bathgate. Jeanette was a hard worker, taking care of home, children, canning, and gardening. They owned and operated the L.B. Hartz Store for many years, open six day a week and after church on Sunday. Virgil and Jeanette enjoyed the weekend dances at the city hall in Bathgate. Virgil passed away December 4, 1997.
Jeanette loved all types and kinds of music, most times knowing all the lyrics to sing along. Jeanette was proud to have participated in the Bathgate minstrel as a soloist, performing in many local communities. She also enjoyed playing cards.
