James P. Moris, 67, of Pembina, ND, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Cavalier Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the church.
James (Jim) was born on June 22, 1957 in Hallock, MN to his parents James Frank and Helen Moris. Jim graduated from Pembina High School in 1975 as Valedictorian of his class and went on to attend Farm Management at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. Completing his studies, he returned to Pembina, ND to pursue his passion for farming. Jim married the love of his life, Janine Rustad on September 16, 1977 in Hallock, MN. They raised 4 daughters on their rural farmstead. He was a dedicated family man and proud steward of the land that the Lord blessed his family with. He also held outside employment by driving school bus, working for H.A. & J.L. Wood Brokerage, driving semi-truck for Cosley Farms and Trans-Systems, Controlled Environments, and helping local farmers. He was later employed by the US Postal Service as rural carrier until his retirement in 2023. He enjoyed visiting and making friends throughout his postal career.
Jim loved anything western-horses, clothes, boots, and books. John Wayne was his hero. A dream of having a rodeo in historic Pembina became a reality for 10 years.
His biggest pride and joy was being able to be called “Grandpa.” (a.k.a. “Old Chops,” “Jimmy,” and “Gramps”). He and Janine found themselves on the road continuously following sporting, school, and church events. He always had a kind word, numerous pats on the back, and a side hug to show his everlasting support. All the grandkids have many great hunting and fishing adventures, sleepovers, bonfires, and ranger ride memories that will be forever engrained in their hearts.
Jim had a “True Cowboy Way” about him. He had a strong work ethic, honesty, respect for others, loyalty, a deep connection to the land and animals, and a willingness to face challenges with resilience and courage; essentially, doing the right thing even when it was difficult, and always upholding a strong moral compass.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janine, 4 Daughters: Jennifer (David) Hurst, JoEllyn (Bryan) Ratchenski, Jillyne (Allen) Stauffenecker, and Jaclyn (Ryan) Girodat. Grandchildren: Colton (Sydney) Ratchenski, Alyx Ratchenski, Kya, Grady, and Qynn Hurst; Carson, Codi, and McKinley Stauffenecker; Rhyder, Sawyer, and Bryggs Girodat. Mother, Helen Moris; Brother, Frank Moris.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Frank Moris and an infant sister Mary Ann Moris, his father-in-law, Alfred “Ruste” and mother-in-law, Patricia Rustad.
