John C. ââ¬ï¿½Jack' Soeby, 85, of Walhalla, ND died Friday, September 24, 2010, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 28th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church. Burial in the Hillside Cemetery, Walhalla. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Walhalla Ambulance Service or the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla.
John C. Soeby was born October 4, 1924, in the South Walhalla area to Carl K. and Martha (Metelmann) Soeby. He attended rural country school and graduated from Walhalla High School in 1942. Jack attended NDSU for one year and in 1943 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He completed pilot training, was commissioned an ensign in 1944, and served as a Naval Aviator until his discharge in 1946. Following his release from the service he returned to NDSU. In 1948, he joined his father in the family business at Soeby Motor Company, where he was active until the time of his death.
On June 27, 1951, he married Maurine Huffman at Walhalla, ND.
Jack was very involved in numerous civic and community activities including the Walhalla Park Board, various hunting and gun clubs, Walhalla Country Club and Airport Authority. Jack also helped establish the Arrowhead Ski Run in 1950. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, photographer, and pilot. Jack loved spending summers with his family and friends at their lake home in Minaki, Ontario. He also belonged to the Walhalla Masonic Lodge, Kem Temple Shrine, and the Park Center-Walhalla Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Maurine; children, Lynn Soeby (Tony Waldbillig), Catania, Sicily, Jon M. (Lisa) Soeby, Buckeye, AZ, Paul R. Soeby and Tod S. Soeby, both of Walhalla; grandchildren, Shonna, Mitchel, Kaylin, Tyler, Conner, Jackson, and Carlton "C.J." Soeby; sisters, Marcella (Larry) McLeod, Moorhead, MN and Carol (Floyd) Hanson, Grand Forks, ND.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Clergy: Rev. Dann Pageler.
Music: Kent and Lisa Dalzell, Vocalists and Sharon Carpenter, Organist.
Military Rites: Bartlette-Resler Post #62, Walhalla American Legion.
