John W. "Jack" Shablow, age 86, of Cavalier, ND died on Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at his home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at the church. Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery, Cavalier, ND. Arrangements with Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
John "Jack" W. Shablow was born November 16, 1920, at Lancaster, MN to Frank and Clara (Przekvas) Shablow. Being his father was employed by the U.S. Immigration Service, the family moved several time during his youth. He graduated from Walhalla High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940, serving for six years. Upon discharge, he worked as a mechanic for his brother, Frank, in Langdon, ND. In 1953, he was employed by the North Dakota Highway Patrol and was stationed in Grafton, ND.
On March 10, 1954, he married Laurel Einarson. They lived in Grafton for 23 years. In 1966, he was elected sheriff of Walsh County and served one term. He served for a time as a city councilman and was a member of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department for many years. In 1977, they moved to a farm near Cavalier.
During his lifetime, Jack had many interest and hobbies. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and loved woodworking. He loved trapshooting and was a lifetime member of the Walsh County Gun Club. In 1996, Jack suffered a spinal cord stroke which left his unable to walk without assistance. He adapted to his inconvenience and managed to continue his woodworking and lived a relatively normal life.
He was a member of the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Walhalla American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Pembina County Sportsmen's Club, and Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Jack also served on the Pembina County Water Board and as Beaulieu Township Supervisor.
He is survived by his wife, Laurel; daughter, Catherine (Duane) Robert and grandsons, Bradley and Kenton, Hiawatha, KS; son, Curt (Janine) Shablow and grandsons, Adam and Cody, Cavalier, ND; and special granddaughter Tina Lynn Colacicco; sister, Helen Bodelson, Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Kathryn Shablow, Langdon, ND; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Victor, Ted, and Frank; and sister, Bernice Gastonguay.
Clergy: Rev. John Werth.
Casket Bearers: Adrian Askew, Tony Colacicco, Kelly Johnson, Jeremy Kihne, Joe Matindale, and Douglas Olason.
Music: Alice Olson Byron, Organist and John Shablow, Soloist.
