Irene Weston, 102, longtime Sarles resident, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND.
Irene South was born September 20, 1906 to Herbert and Ida (Schwantz) South in Minnesota. She came to the Sarles area in 1914 in a covered wagon. She attended area school and graduated from Hannah High School in 1930. Irene was untied in marriage to Erwin Weston on April 8, 1930. Together the couple farmed in the area and settled on a farm east of Sarles in 1936 on the farm formerly known as Huntââ¬â¢s Hill and is now known as Westonââ¬â¢s Hill. Irene moved to Langdon in 1981 and to Maple Manor in 2000.
Irene was an active woman within her community serving in the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Cypress Homemakers Club, and a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church of Sarles where she served on the Ladies Aid.
Despite the hard work of sowing, weeding, and harvesting Irene enjoyed many hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. She took great joy in cooking for her family and friends using her home-grown produce and meat and poultry raised on the farm to provide wonderful food. A life-long love of reading kept her informed and eager to discuss local, state and national issues. When the kids were grown and her gardens were smaller, she had more time so Irene knit numerous delicately beautiful doiliesââ¬Â¦. treasures! Always, to her last days, Irene loved, cherished and cared for her family and friends.
Irene is survived by her children: Herb (Marjorie) Weston of Sarles, Carol Dietz of Homer, AK, Richard Weston of Sarles, Harold (Gail) Weston of Sarles; daughter-in-law Marilyn Weston of Hannah, ND; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Erwin, son Glenn, daughter-in-law Marion ââ¬ÅSnooksââ¬Å¥ Weston and great-grandson Brent Weston.
