Imelda Theresa (Stevens) Chaput, 93, of Langdon, ND, passed away April 13, 2012, at the Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND.
Imelda Stevens was born in Mount Carmel Township, of Cavalier County on October 3, 1918, to William and Helen (Hoffarth) Stevens. She was raised on her parentsââ¬â¢ farm and attended country school and went on to attend Langdon High School. Imelda lived a busy life as the oldest child helping her mother with her six younger siblings.
Imelda married Wilfred Chaput on October 11, 1937, at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. They farmed and raised livestock in Perry Township and she loved her flowers and garden. They had three children, LaVern, Beverly and Gerald. Gerald passed away August 27, 1953, in a farm accident at the age of 12.
After their children were grown, Imelda became very involved in the community. She was an active member of the St. Alphonsus Church, served as the President of the St. Alphonsus Altar Society and formed Circles in the Society. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, served as President of the Cancer Society unit in Langdon, was Memorial Chairman of the Cancer Society and on the State Cancer Board. She was also a member of the Perry Homemakers, member and treasurer of the Langdon Senior Center, and served on the County Council on Aging. In addition, she helped organize the Right to Life organization in Cavalier County.
Wilfred and Imelda moved to Langdon and purchased a home in 1971. Later they built a house where they resided for more than 20 years. Wilfred passed away February 22, 1998. Imelda continued to live in their home until December 2005 when she went to live at the Maple Manor Care Center.
Imelda is survived by two children: LaVern (Margaret Lien) Chaput and Beverly (Duane) Otto;11 grandchildren (Paul, Gary, Karla, Kevin, Kathy, Karen, Roger, Marilyn, Laurie, Janet, Jolyn) and 20 great-grandchildren (Jacob, Jannon, Krista, Ali, Taylor, Kinsey, Abby, Kathleen, Ethan, Andrew, Charlie, Jack, Sam, Brynn, Jordan, Jonathan, Justin, Hanna, Paige, Crystal); two brothers: Allen (Selma) and Keith Stevens (June) and sisters-in-laws: Louise and Lorraine Stevens.
Imelda was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilfred, son Gerald, brothers: James, Lester and Earl, and her sister Genevieve Washebek.
Imeldaââ¬â¢s motto was ââ¬ÅThe purpose of life isnââ¬â¢t only to be happy but to matter, to be productive, and to be useful; to have it make a difference that you lived at all.ââ¬Å¥
VISITATION will be held on Tuesday, April 17 beginning at 5:00pm with a 7:30pm prayer service at Brooks Funeral Home. Visitation will also take place one hour before the funeral at the church on Wednesday.
SERVICES will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon.
INTERMENT will take place at Calvary Cemetery of Langdon, ND following the funeral mass.
