Howard Nuelle

Howard Nuelle, age 84, of Langdon ND, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2009, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon, while surrounded by his loving family.

Howard Nuelle was born November 21, 1924 in Langdon ND, the son of Conrad and Anna (Hahn) Nuelle. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Dresden ND. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Elgin Township Rural School, where he graduated from the eighth grade. He continued farming with his father until at his age of 16 when he began farming on his own.

Howard married Ellen Sperling on July 27, 1950 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Dresden. They built their first home on his farmstead where they raised their five children. After living on the farm for 20 years, they built a new home in Langdon where they resided for 38 years. In the winters of their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling to warmer areas to visit family and friends in California, Arkansas, and Arizona.

Howard was active in his community. He served on the board of directors for Elgin Township. He served as a trustee for the United Lutheran Church of Langdon. He was a charter member of the Langdon Fraternal Order of Eagles Club 3454 and also a past member of the Elks.

Farming was Howard’s passion. He enjoyed his days working on the farm and was proud to receive the Soil Conservation Achievement Award in 1968. In 1969, he hosted the North Dakota Spaghetti Safari on his farm to help promote North Dakota and specifically the Langdon area as the Durum Capital of the World. He was a member of the US Durum Growers Association and a member of the National Wheat Growers Association. Besides farming, he enjoyed sport fishing in various lakes of North Dakota and Canada, including a deep-sea fishing trip to Mexico. In his later years, Howard enjoyed spending lots of time with his grandchildren, children, and other family and friends.

Howard will be greatly missed. Family members include his wife, Ellen; his children (and their spouses): Brenda (Tom) Longmire, Plymouth MN, Dale (Demetra) Nuelle, Riverside CA, Jim (Shannon) Nuelle, Langdon ND, Jeff (Sue) Nuelle, Mandan ND; and his four grandchildren: Nicholas Nuelle, Harrison Nuelle, Christopher Nuelle, Sophia Nuelle; two sisters, Clara Bohn and Lorraine Crockett both of Polson MT; a brother, Bernhard (Janice) Nuelle of Langdon ND. Howard was preceded in death by his beloved son Marty, his parents Anna and Conrad, and his two older brothers Reinhold and Edward.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 6pm Thursday April 30, 2009 at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon and for one hour before the time of the services at the church on Friday.

SERVICES Will be 10:30am Friday May 1, 2009 at the United Lutheran Church of Langdon, ND
