Helen Stevens, 87, of Langdon, ND, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND.
Helen Spanier was born February 22, 1924 at Chicago, IL to William and Barbara (Lill) Spanier. She has lived in Cavalier County since infancy. Helen attended and graduated from St. Alphonsus grade and high school at Langdon, ND. While in high school she worked as a waitress. She went on to attend Union Commercial Business College in Grand Forks, ND. After college, Helen worked as a bookkeeper at 1st National Bank of Langdon and as a teller at Bank of America in California. Helen was united in marriage to Lester B. Stevens on September 27, 1947 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon. They made their home in Langdon where together they farmed and raised their family. She served as bookkeeper at the Cavalier County Republican of Langdon, ND and volunteered as a teacherââ¬â¢s aide at St. Alphonsus School.
Helen was active in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, sang in the church choir and was a member of the Altar Society. Helen was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Having begun her involvement in 1964, over the years she had served as 1st Vice Regent, Regent from 1991-1993, Secretary and Treasurer. Helen was also a member of the Cavalier County Senior Citizen Center.
Helen is survived by son-in-law: Harry Kram of Langdon, ND; children: Ron (Pat) Stevens of Bellevue, NE, Carol (Pat) Cook of Cavalier, ND, Becky (Nick) Sevart of Bismarck, ND,and Debbie (Joe) Horan of Eau Claire, WI; grandchildren: Leslie (Erin) McVicker, Jennifer (Casey) Garske, Rhonda Iverson, Terri Stevens, Joshuah Cook, Danny (Kallie) Cook, Brian (Angela) Sevart, Jason Sevart, Dillon Brown, Dalton Brown; great-grandchildren: Abigail, BreAnna, Samantha, Franklin, Catarina; and great-great-granddaughter: AdriAnna, cousin: Robert (Anne) Lill of Alsen, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester, daughter Gail Kram, daughter-in-law Carol Stevens, and siblings: Edward who passed away in infancy, Betty Wamboldt, Jake Spanier, Arthur Spanier and Clara Barnes.
VISITATION will begin at 4pm on Thursday, June 2, 2011 with a 7pm Rosary and Prayer Service at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon, ND.
SERVICES will be Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11:30am at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon with Fr. Michael Schommer officiating.
