Helen L. Olson

Helen L. Olson, 95, of Langdon, ND, died Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Helen Louise Jennings was born to Albert and Lillian (Dunford) Jennings on August 1, 1923, on the family farm near Langdon, ND. She attended grade school in Harvey Township and graduated valedictorian from Langdon High School in 1942. Helen attended North Dakota Agriculture College (now North Dakota State University) to train in Home Economics. Her schooling was interrupted by the sudden death of her father, and she returned home to help on the family farm.
She was united in marriage to Ronald Olson on November 26, 1947, in Fargo, North Dakota. They established their farmstead across the coulee from the Jennings family homestead. There they raised their four children. For several years she subbed at various county schools. She stayed busy caring for her children, gardening and especially took pleasure in landscaping their farmyard. Helen’s hands were never idle, and she was a very capable woman. She was an excellent seamstress and many people benefited from her clothing alteration and drapery business. She also drove the school bus for a number of years.
Ron and Helen retired from the farm and moved to Langdon in 1982. There she worked as secretary to the administrator of Maple Manor. She and Ron spent 10 winters volunteering their sewing and electrical skills at the Rio Grande Bible Institute near Edinburg, Texas. They had recently resided at Wheatland Estates in Langdon.
Helen's Christian faith was very important to her and she served the Lord in various ministries at Stillwell Community Church, Evangelical United Brethren Church and Emmanuel Evangelical Church. She was active in the Gideons International Auxiliary, Maple Manor Auxiliary and Stillwell Homemakers Club.
Helen is survived by her husband of 71 years, Ron, of Langdon; children: Ross (Barb) Olson of Fargo, ND, Lee (Nina) Olson of Anchorage, AK, Scott (Sherry) Olson of Hayden, ID and Ramona Olson of Pine Island, MN; grandchildren: Leif (Erin) Olson, Dustin (Kate) Olson, Haily Olson, Dakota Olson, Burt (Lisa) Merculief, Randall David, Becky (Josh) Watkins, Jennifer Olson, and Adam (Crystal) Olson; six great-grandchildren; and brother Robert (Myrtle) Jennings. She was preceded in death by her parents and one great-grandson.

A memorial service For Helen will be held Thursday, November 1, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Langdon. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church on Thursday.
