Helen Berg, 97, of Cavalier, ND passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Wedgewood Manor. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held Friday, May 9th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Pembina County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Faith In Action, or Cavalier Presbyterian Church
Helen was born on November 24, 1916 in Lemmon SD to Robert John and Emma (Kaplan) Fields. She graduated from the Gladys Wynne Business School and worked as a telephone operator and chief operator for Northwestern Bell and Southwestern Bell.
On July 31st, 1943, she married Carl Berg and spent her married life in Amarillo, TX, Lemmon, SD and finally Cavalier, ND as of 1946. She served as the Cavalier City Librarian and worked in the Wedgewood Manor Activity Department where she also volunteered for many years.
She was active in the Cavalier Presbyterian Church as a Deacon and an Elder, Sunday School teacher and superintendent and in the United Presbyterian Women. She was also active in the community with Civitas, Homemakers, Legion Auxiliary, PTA and Band Mothers. Helen was honored as a "Home Town Hero" by KUTY and was the 1987 Barley Queen.
As a strong proponent of the health care system in Cavalier, she served on the Pembina County Hospital Board, working as a fund raiser for the Hospital, was an ombudsman for the Hospital and the Wedgewood Manor Nursing Home and was a charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was honored as North Dakota Health Care Volunteer of the Year (from Pembina County) for her dedication to health care.
Survivors include her children: John (Nancy) Berg, Wayzata, MN, Cheryl (Tom) Berg Toth, Naperville, IL and Robert (Vicky) Berg, Plymouth, MN; her grandchildren: Cindy (Dan) Berg Koch, Megan (Mark) Berg Neisius, Kristen (Ty) Berg, Jason Toth, Steve (Whitney) Berg and Bob (Breanne) Berg; her great grandchildren: Sophie and Abbey Koch, Isabel Neisius, Miles Amass, Gavin and Mason Berg, and Preston and Dru Berg.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Carl; brothers: Emery Fields and Robert Fields and sister, Ruth Fields Courtney.
Clergy: Rev. John Werth; Music: Cleone Whelan, Chris Hunt and the Greg Mayo family; Casket Bearers: her grandchildren; Honorary Casket Bearers: her great grandchildren.
