Hazel I. Dunnigan, 88, of Walhalla, ND died Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Woodside Village, Grand Forks, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 10, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla. Visitation on Thursday, December 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. rosary and prayer service at the Nelson-Askew Funeral Home, Walhalla. Burial at the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the Arthritis Foundation.
Hazel was born April 19, 1922, in Benson County to Clifford and Emma (Braniff) Baxter. She graduated from St. Alphonsus High School, Langdon, ND, in 1941. As a younger girl she enjoyed horseback riding.
On February 4, 1942, she married Joseph Dunnigan at Langdon. After their marriage they farmed in the Walhalla area until their retirement. She was active in the church where she taught Christian education and was also active in the local homemakers club. Hazel also worked as a nurse's aide at the Pembilier Nursing Center.
She was active in fund raising for the Amercian Cancer Society. Some of her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, baking bread, and making jelly. Her love of the outdoors was evident in her gardening and picking berries.
Survivors include her children: Kathleen (Guy) Lee, Walhalla; Janice (Ronald) Stephen, Stover, MO; James (Julie) Dunnigan, Jamestown, ND; and Gerri Dunnigan ( Michael Gregory), Grand Forks; grandchildren: Marian Fox, Mary Jo Otto, and Damian Steinke; great grandchildren: Delaney and Destyn Otto; sisters: Helen Green, West Fargo, ND; Charlotte Willett; Marge Ordahl in AZ; and Clara Thurston, Fargo, ND.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Joe; son, Gregory Dunnigan; brothers: Harvey and Norman Baxter, and Gordon Moe; and sisters: Blanche Williams and Nettie Skaar.
Celebrants: Rev. Fr. Thomas Krupich and Deacon Jim Carpenter.
Music: Bernadine Kopf, Organist and LaRae Horgan, Soloist.
Honorary Pallbearers: All of Hazel's Family, Friends, and Neighbors.
Casket Bearers: Earl Dunnigan, Patrick Dunnigan, Tom Hardy, Shane Heck, Brad King, and Robert King.
