Harold Kertz

Harold B. Kertz, 86, Alvarado, MN died on January 3, 2013 at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.

Harold was born August 19, 1926 at Nekoma, ND to John L. and Rose (Wilhelmi) Kertz. The family moved to Langdon, ND in 1930 where he graduated from St. Alphonsus High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. After attending signalman school in Maryland, he was assigned to the USS PGM 10 at Guam and served in the South Pacific until he was discharged in 1946. He attended the University of North Dakota for two years and then the University of Denver from which he graduated in 1949. He returned to Langdon and was with family members in the grocery business and liquor store. He joined a construction company in 1956 and later moved with the company to East Grand Forks, MN, Boise, ID, and Appleton, WI. In 1974 he moved with his family to Thief River Falls, MN where he owned a building construction company until retiring in 1993. He moved to Alvarado, MN in 1999. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Elks, and the Cavalier County WWII Last Man’s Company. He enjoyed time at the family lake cabin on Coney Island at Kenora, Ont., fishing, boating, and never-ending working at the cabin. Recent summers were spent at Devils Lake, ND.

Harold married Marlyn Hall of Munich, ND in 1959. She survives along with four daughters and two sons: Cindy (Mike) Beaudry of Alvarado, MN, Theresa (Mark) Stahl of Fargo, ND, Jean (Rick) Gobell of Lino Lakes, MN, Jerry (Jeny) Kertz of Woodbury, MN, Michelle (Jim) Donahue of Mounds View, MN, and Brian (Lisa) Kertz of Anoka, MN. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Kyle & Sara Beaudry, Scott & Annie Gobell, Rose & Jesse Stahl, Andrew, Tommie & William Kertz, Cailin Donahue, Zachary & Ethan Kertz; brother: Jim of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law: Margaret Kertz of Langdon, ND and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: John, Francis, Victor, Robert and an infant brother, James.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 7th, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Church of Langdon, ND.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church.

Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon, ND.
