Gertrude R. McMillan age 88 of Cavalier, ND died on Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 30, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation on Thursday, June 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. Burial in the Parish Cemetery. Arrrangements with Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
Gertrude Rose Nowatzki was born September 20, 1917, at Mt. Carmel, ND to Hugo W. and Gertrude C. (Johnson) Nowatzki. In 1925, she came to Pembina County with her family, where she grew up, attended and graduated from Cavalier High School.
On February 1, 1940, she married William J. McMillan at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Cavalier, ND. In the early 1940's she was a telephone operator and worked at Burn's Cafĩ. They lived in Kenmare and Tuttle, ND, where Bill was a dairy inspector from 1970 to 1973, then returning to Cavalier. Upon returning to Cavalier she was care taker for Northern Valley Homes. Besides raising her own children, Gertrude was the "Babysitter" for numerous families in Cavalier, where she was kept very busy at times. William McMillan died on February 14, 1994.
She was a life long member of the St. Bridget's Catholic Church, where she taught C.C.D. and was past secretary-treasurer of St. Ann Altar Society.
In August of 2002, she became a resident of Wedgewood Manor, where she enjoyed her stay and considered it her "Home." She made new and met old friends there, attended activities, Bible study, continued her crocheting. She was very content and thoroughly enjoyed her four years there, and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Rose Ann (Carl) Winkler, Cavalier, ND; Jane (Sid) Laxdal, Miniota, MB, Canada; Helen (Denny) Bachand, Warroad, MN; Jim (Patty) McMillan and Raymond McMillan, all of Cavalier; 16 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; siblings, Mildred Snell, Cavalier; Mary (J. Vincent) Sauve, Duluth, MN; Del Nowatzki, Brainerd, MN; Charles (Madeline) Nowatzke, Bakersfield, CA; Cecil (Leona) Nowatzki, Cavalier.
Gertrude was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Gloria Wirtz, granddaugter, Charlotte Winkler; brothers, Harold and Hugo Nowatzki, and sisters, Dororthy Nowatzki and Margaret Paul; sister-in-law, Lorna Nowatzki.
