Gerald E. Peterson, 88, of Langdon, ND passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015 at his farm near Langdon.
Gerald Eugene was born on the family farm on October 21, 1926 to J.M. and Helga (Aasen) Peterson. He grew up in the Mona area and attended Loam #4 county school. Gerald and Lois Welsh were united in marriage on October 30, 1949 at Harvey Centre Methodist Church. Gerald farmed until retiring in 1997. He was an agent for Cavalier County Mutual Insurance Company starting in 1965 and later served as a board member and eventually president of Northeast Mutual Insurance Company, which is now called Family Mutual Insurance Company. Working for and being involved with the insurance company was a great source of pride and satisfaction as they grew to cover much of eastern North Dakota. For the last six years, Gerald has resided in Fargo, ND at One Oak Place where he readily made many new friends.
Gerald was a member of the American Angus Association, a 4-H leader, and was on the Loam township board. He enjoyed playing cards, deer hunting with friends and neighbors, and loved his farm, both livestock and the land. As he retired from farming, he really took an interest in Appaloosa horses. He was a member of the Red River Valley Appaloosa Association and won many awards with his stallion, D.J., who is still living happily at age 23. In Fargo, he became a member of the local Sons of Norway. Gerald was a member of South Pembina Church until its closing and then United Lutheran Church in Langdon.
Gerald is survived by his children: Lynn of West Fargo, ND, Paul (Debbie) of Langdon, and Lorna (John) Ihle of Barnesville, MN; grandchildren: Matthew Peterson, Ethan Peterson, Mallory (Jared) Smith, and Caitlin (Andrew) Kreklau; sister Ione Beauchamp of East Grand Forks, MN; special dog Holler; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lois; brothers John, Virgil, and infant Donald; and sisters Elaine and Eunice.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 11, 2015 at United Lutheran Church of Langdon, ND. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon and for one hour prior to service time at the church on Friday.
