George W. Winkler, 92, of Cavalier and formerly of Neche, ND passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, ND. Funeral service will be held Friday, July 13, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 12th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND.
George W. Winkler was born May 14, 1926, near Pembina, ND to Otto and Mildred (Saiger) Winkler. He attended school near Neche. George served with the 96th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.
On June 14, 1949, he married Eileen G. Stegman at Neche. They owned and operated the Roxy Theatre in Neche from 1949 to 1963. In 1964, started managing the Farmers Union Oil Company in Neche, until his retirement in 1989.
Things he enjoyed were woodworking, gardening, yardwork, hunting, and fishing. George was always there to help anyone or fix anything day or night. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of the Gainer-McAndrews Post 242, Neche American Legion.
He is survived by his children: Debra Lidstrom, Stanley, ND, Dick (Bonnie) Winkler, Cavalier, ND, David (Sarah) Winkler, Neche, ND; grandchildren: Derek Lidstrom, Heidi (Matt) LeGassick, Dane (Susie) Winkler, Zachary (Erica) Winkler, Stefan (Heather) Winkler, Erin Winkler; great-grandchilden: Alexis and mother Jenna; Parker, Izabella, Aniston, Charlotte, Viera, Calan, and Baylor; siblings: Gladys Symington, Joyce McGuiggan, Jim (Phyllis) Winkler, Louise Menke. Also survived by Georgeââ¬â¢s special family at Wedgewood Manor.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Eileen; brother, Bob; brother-in-laws: Mandy, Elmer, and Garnet.
