George Schmiess, 90, of Langdon, ND passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012 at Maple Manor Care Center of Langdon, ND.
George was born December 9, 1921 to David and Amelia Schmiess on the family farm just east of Alsen, ND. He attended rural school and graduated from Alsen High School. George began farming after that and continued to farm his whole life. He married Velva Adrian on October 13, 1957 in Valley City, ND. They made their home on the farm near Alsen, and in 1990, purchased a home in Langdon. Velva passed away in June of 2010, and at that time, George became a resident of Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
George loved to play horseshoes, was a talented musician- especially playing the guitar and mandolin, and enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the Swiss Mennonite Church of Alsen, ND.
George is survived by his children: Vicki Anderson of Grand Forks, ND, Sheldon (Tammie) Schmiess of Sabin, ND, Tim (Susan) Schmiess of Harvey, ND, Jodi (John) Gunnerson of Houston, TX; 11 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded by his parents, his wife Velva, son-in-law Martin Anderson and siblings: David Schmiess, Victor Schmiess, and Mary Winchell.
VISITATION will take place on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 5-7:00 with a 7:00 prayer service at Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon, ND. Visitation will also take place for one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday.
SERVICES will take place on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Swiss Mennonite Church in Alsen, ND.
