Gene Hanson, 80, of Hoople and Grafton, ND passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 11th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Hoople Cemetery.
Melvin "Gene" Hanson was born January 2, 1932, at Kennedy, MN to Oscar and Judith (Skjordal) Hanson. He was raised and educated in Kennedy.
On June 17, 1951, he married Olga Kostiuk In Hallock, MN. They moved to Hoople where they raised their family and he worked for Aaland Farms over 50 years. Olga passed away on December 30, 1992. In June of 2010, he moved to Grafton and has resided at Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier since December of 2011.
Gene enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, hockey and North Dakota high school basketball.
Survivors include his children: Roger (Marje) Hanson, Grand Forks, ND, Merlin (Leona) Hanson, Warroad, MN, Sue (John) Ouellette, Grand Forks, Randy (Janet) Hanson, Washburn, ND, and Shelly (Sandy) Poitra, Grafton; grandchildren: Terri Price and Kim Hanson; Christy (Dan) Perius and Robyn (Aaron) Unruh; Jenny Hanson and Sarah (Roland) Courtemanche; Brittney and Zach Poitra.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; son, Leslie Hanson, and a brother in infancy.
