Garnet R. Horsley passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Pembilier Nursing Home in Walhalla North Dakota.
Garnet was born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925 to Thomas and Ruby (Inglis) Horsley of St. Joseph Township North Dakota. He was the oldest of four children.
Garnet received his elementary education at East Leroy School, a one-room summer school. He attended Park River Agricultural School until the age of 16. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Navy. He served on the USS Helena. Before reporting to naval training school, he and Anne Menke were married on November 1, 1944, in Neche.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, Garnet began farming in the Neche area and continued to farm until retirement. Garnet served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Farmer’s Union Oil Company in Neche. He also served as President of the Pembina County Farmer’s Union board and sat on the State Farmers Union Board. He served for seventeen years on the board of the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Growers Association, Drayton factory District.
Garnet and Ann spent winters in Mesa Arizona for 25 years.
Garnet is survived by three children: Rebecca (Ralph) Kain, Janet (Radley) Austin, and Allen (Roxie) Horsley; five grandchildren Mike(Renee) Kain, Melissa (Tony) Varno, Nicole (Bradley Sjoberg) Austin, Andrew (Amanda) Horsley, Karla Horsley: and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Alton, sisters Lois Daby and Dora Mae Grube, grandson Brian Austin, son-in-law Radley Austin and wife of 65 years Anne.
A private family service will be held with burial in Bruce Cemetery, Neche North Dakota. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND.
