Florence Krause was born June 27, 1917, in Neche, ND to Carl and Blanche Krause. She attended grade school and high school in Neche, playing basketball, tennis and cheerleading. Upon graduation she attended Mayville State Teachers College.
On May 1, 1940, she married Russell I. Kain and made their home in Grand Forks. Russell served in the Army during World War II and upon his discharge they moved to the family farm by Neche, where they farmed for several years before moving into Neche. Florence then used her teaching skills as a substitute teacher and also tutored special ed students.
Florence was very active at Saints Nereus and Achilleus Church, volunteering at the church stand at the Pembina County Fair each year to raise money for the church. She also held various offices in the St. Ann's Altar Society and taught youth religion classes.
Upon retirement, Russell and Florence moved to Vero Beach, FL for the winter months, but always returned to Neche each summer. Russell died in 1990, and Vero Beach became Florence's permanent home. She continued to live in South Gate Village, a mobile home park. She led an active life, swimming, three-wheeled biking, playing Pinochle, reading, shuffle boarding, watching her favorite sports on TV. Other park activities included bingo, pot lucks, chorus, kitchen band, and dancing. Florence also discovered a talent for oil painting in her later years.
In 2004, Hurricane Jeanne destroyed her mobile home, at that time she moved to Merrill Gardens, an assisted living facility in Vero Beach. Florence lived there easily and comfortably, despite her worsening blindness from Macular Degeneration.
