Fern M. Peterson Fedje, 86, of Cavalier, ND passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2013, at the Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, ND. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 3rd from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, with an Eastern Star service at 6:45 p.m. There will be a one hour visitation at the church before the time of services. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Grafton Altru Hospice and Pembina County Relay for Life.
Fern was born January 15, 1927, to Roy and Helen (Hudson) Cull in Hamilton Township. She attended the Cull School District #48 and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1944. After attending Mayville State Teachers College she taught school for four years.
On November 11, 1948, she married Ray A. Peterson at Hamilton. Throughout the years, she farmed with her husband in the Backoo area, worked for Harold Kopf at Farmers Union Insurance, and began her retail career by working at Sally's in Cavalier. In 1970, she started her own retail clothing and fabric business, having stores in Cavalier, Langdon, and Park River. Ray passed away on March 28, 1987. She then married Lyle Fedje on June 24, 1995 in Cavalier, and resided there until moving to Grand Forks in September of 2011. They enjoyed wintering at their home in Apache Junction, AZ.
Fern was active in the church, DeMolay, and Eastern Star. She served as director of the Pembina County Fair Board for over 50 years, and served as superintendent of the Fine Arts.In 1993, Fern was named North Dakota Barley Queen. Her hobbies included quilting , playing bridge, and whist.
Survivors include her husband, Lyle; children: Arnie (Sandy) Peterson, Cavalier and Mary (Rick) English, Grafton, ND; grandchildren: A.J. Peterson and Drew Peterson, Corey Nelson, Jennifer Hatt; Brett English and Stephanie English; three great grandchildren; stepchildren: Susan (Bruce) Otto, Linda (Earl) Otto, Allen (Penny) Fedje, and Lowell Fedje; nine step-grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren; sister, Ella Mae (Jack) Rowe, Bathgate, ND.
Also preceding her in death were her parents and brother, Alvin Cull.
All who knew her are grateful that she is once again the amazing woman, she once was.

Music: Connie Steiger, Organist Karen Morrison, Soloist, and Barb Gunderson, Cellist.
Honorary Pallbearers: Fern's Morning Coffee Gal's and Bridge Card Friends, Pieceful Borders Quilting Guild, and Bathgate Order of Easter Star Chapter #74.
