Ethyl M. Johnstone, age 91, of Walhalla, ND died of pneumonia on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, MN. Funeral services will be
held on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 12, 2007 from 6:30-7:30 PM with a 7:30 PM prayer service at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation 1 hour before the time of service in the church, on Tuesday. Burial in the Hillside Cemetery, Walhalla, ND. Arrangements with Nelson-Askew Funeral Home, Walhalla, ND. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for: St. Peter's Episcopal Church Stained Glass Window Fund, Walhalla Beautification, The Gorge Gallery - Brush Bunch in Walhalla.
Ethyl Johnstone was born in Walhalla on July 12, 1915, to Joshua and Florence Strong. She attended Walhalla Public School and graduated in 1931. Ethyl married Hector Johnstone in 1937, in Walhalla where they raised seven children.
Ethyl was active in her community including: Walhalla Public School PTO, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, 4-H leadership. She helped to establish the Walhalla Public Library, was a founding member and benefactor of the Walhalla Country Club in company with her husband. Ethyl was active in the Republican Party serving as the first president of Republican Women of Pembina County and a one time alternate delegate to the National Republican Convention. She was a founding member of the Brush Brunch, a local artists group. Avid gardener, voracious reader and travel enthusiast.
Ethyl was preceded in death by her parents, sisters; Chryl Strong-Allison and Beryl Strong-Miller; husband, Hector Johnstone; daughter, Holly Johnstone-Hartigan; son, H. Mark Johnstone.
She is survived by children, Heather Johnstone, Hector Johnstone (Karen), Hilary Beste (Dennis), Hope Johnston (Roger Carrier), Haidee Johnstone (Michael Skjei); brother, Daryl Strong (Bette); grandchildren, Teirney Dunnigan, Mark Wall, Deirdre Lee, Andrea Wall, Shannon Larson, Morgan Lee, Samantha Ward, Andrew Johnstone, Travis Beste, Kathryn Reeves, Kyle Beste; nieces and nephews, Jaryl Strong, Chryl Strong Desautel, Roma Strong Zanders, Caroline Strong Clark; Jon Miller; Irene, Michael, Laurel, Janelle, Claire, Patrick, Brian, Kevin, Terrance Ovens; cousins, Dixon Best, Naomi Best Squire, Evie Mae Syrup Clark, Delores Hall Greenwood.
